SUNFLOWERS ARE GREAT IN 2008
|
In agriculture, there is hardly anything more beautiful than a field of sunflowers in full bloom in the morning sun. Just as sunflowers seem to smile to the sun, sunflower farmers will likely be smiling when they get their fields harvested this fall. North Dakota is first in the nation in sunflower production and the north central region of North Dakota is the leader for sunflower production, both for oil and confectionery sunflowers. According to N.D Ag. Statistics, of the 1,075,000 total acres seeded to sunflowers in our state for 2007, counties in north central and northwest account for one third of that total. The top five counties for sunflower production in North Dakota by rank are: Bottineau - 88,600 acres, Emmons - 64,900 acres, McHenry - 58,800 acres, Ward - 57,400 acres and Grand Forks - 51,200 acres, with Renville county following in closely at 40,900. Acreage for 2008 is expected to remain level or even increase.
