Johnston retires after
33 years of Education
|
By Kiara Crosby
Mr. Brent Johnston is retiring from education after 33 years.
Arriving in Bowbells in 1971, Johnston taught in the district until 1996 as a science teacher. He then went on to Wolford, Carson, and Trenton and worked as administrator.
When Johnston returned to Bowbells to retire, he was subbing in the district for a year and then was hired as part time superintendent in 2004.
The greatest joy of his career over the years has been watching the students grow and seeing their successes.
Happy to see them mature into fine adults with good careers, he said, “I truly enjoy catching up with past students and see what’s happened in their lives over the years.” Adding, “Bowbells has turned out a lot of really successful people.”
Now that Johnston is officially retired, he plans on enjoying his time traveling and seeing family.
“I might even have a summer vacation!” he said enthusiastically.
To honor Mr. Johnston, the Bowbells PTO hosted a celebration of his career. Children read favorite memories of Johnston, Toni Jensen shared about Johnston’s career, and cake was enjoyed by all.

New hangars being installed at Mohall Municipal Airport
|
|
If you have driven past the Mohall Municipal Airport, which is located just west of Mohall, you may have noticed the new hangars that are being erected there. Presently there are five hangars scheduled to be built this summer, with more expected in the future.
Earlier this year an incentive program was put together through the Renville County Commissioners, Mohall City 1¢ Sales Tax, and the Renville County JDA to entice interested individuals to build the hangars.
There will be three different sizes for the hangars. The two hangars pictured above, which are currently being built, are 54’ wide by 60’ deep. Another hangar, which was to be started this past weekend, will be 70’ wide x 64’ deep. Two additional hangars are slated for ... (See complete story on Renville County Farmer Homepage) More

Westhope Spring Music Awards Concert Held
|
y Marlena Chaboudy
On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, the Westhope students performed their spring music concert for family and friends. The theme this year was "How to be a pirate in seven easy songs".
The concert started out with the High School Choir singing three good old pop music hits that got their audience tapping their toes. The songs "Here comes the sun", I believe I can fly", and "Footloose", were not only performed for the audience by the choir showing off their choral talents, there was even a couple of the students that felt the music "deep down" and showed us a few dance moves as well, to go along with the music.
Speech and Drama awards were then presented by Allison Kirk to Logan Hermes, Zach Klokstad, Krystal Heth, Mariana Chavez and Sage Ballantyne for their achievements in both speech and drama. Speech awards were presented to Halima Khalifa, Calvin Henry and Ben Sharkey, and Drama awards were presented to Lakin Ballantyne, Vincent Campanale and Sam Foss.
Kindergartener's then hit the stage and sang three songs that they learned about doggie's, each student cuddling their favorite stuffed puppy that they brought from home.
In following, ten 6th graders jammed out in performing a "Kitchen Jam" for the crowd. A similar musical style of the bucket jam and the chair jam performed by 6th grade students in the previous years, only this time using various kitchen utensils as their musical instruments, thus proving that there is music in everything we use in our daily lives, all you have to do is listen for it.
A pirate ship was then moved out to center stage where the students in grades 1 -5 sang for the audience the saga of "How to be a pirate in seven easy songs". Pirate Captain Zachary Klokstad, 1st Mate Logan Hermes, and Special Buccaneer Krystal Heth performed this mini-musical along side of the elementary students and brought out the pirate in all of us as they were decked out in their swashbuckling pirate best.
The 5th - 8th grade band played the musical work of Mojo by world reknowned composer Rob Grice.
The High School and Cadet Bands played for the audience “Lone Eagle March”, composed by John Edmondson, a terrific concert march dedicated to the American aviator, Charles Lindbergh. They also played “Bohemian Rhapsody”, arranged by Paul Murtha, and also a familiar pop classic by "Queen and instantly recognizable by all as one of the all-time great movie themes.
Band and Choral Director, Mrs. Sylvia Schlieper, then requested the attention of the audience and letters and pins were distributed amongst the students, as well as the three special honor awards.
This year’s recipient of the John Phillip Sousa award was senior Trevor Hulse. The Sousa Award is the pinnacle of achievement in a high school band. It is awarded to honor the top student and recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication.
The Director’s Award this year was presented to 8th grader, Charles (C.J.) Chaboudy. The Director's Award is an honor that is awarded annually to the junior or senior student who has shown dedication to the band program beyond expectations. Charles is also in the pep band at Westhope School and has attended International Music Camp for 2 consecutive years and plans on attending year three this summer.
This year’s Choral Award was presented to senior, Amber Getchell Lesmann. The School Choral Award is the highest honor for high school choral performers. It recognizes the dedication and musical achievement of the top choral students.
The three students each recieved a trophy or plaque and will also have their names added to the plaques in the hallway that also hold the names of their predecessor honorees.
The High School and Cadet bands finished off the evening with a piece entitled Liturgical Fanfare written by American composer Robert W. Smith.
We all will miss the musical talents of our senior students that will be heading off to college this fall, but in following, there are new voices joining the musical ranks of Westhope School every year, and that... is music to my ears.
