Measure #2 to
eliminate property
taxes on the ballot
|
By Kiara Crosby
It is difficult to think of what you will be doing on June 12 when the snow is currently blanketing our landscape, but now is the time to consider what your vote means for you and your neighbor.
Constitutional Measure 2 will be appearing on the statewide ballot. This measure could shift the way local political subdivisions are funded. In turn, this will directly affect county government.
To sum up the proposal, consider this explanation as offered by the ND League of Cities:
What is Measure No. 2?
It’s a proposal to amend the North Dakota Constitution to prohibit political subdivisions (cities, counties, school districts, townships, park districts, water districts, irrigation districts, fire protection districts, soil conservation districts, etc.) from levying a tax on the assessed value of property.
Because of this impact, North Dakota Association of Counties (NDACo) sponsored an informational session at their annual conference highlighting both the positive and negatives of the measure.
The public policy implications of the measure are significant and the NDACo is ardent that members of the public fully understand the consequences before they cast their vote.

Wiecks Shows Off Her Quilting Talents at Gateway
|
By Ginny Heth
There are quilts -- the kind that are used to keep you warm and then there are quilts -- the kind that take hours and hours of cutting, pinning, sewing and ironing. These, too, keep you warm but they are so beautiful to look at!
Glen Wiecks, new resident of Westhope, has been piecing quilts since she joined the Quilt Guild at Tioga in 1997. “Whenever I have time, I go down and work on my quilts,” says Wiecks.
Over the years she has made quilts from various methods but currently her favorite seems to be paper piecing, a complicated method of putting together tiny pieces to make the most beautiful designs! She also does lots of applique designs.
On Friday, January 27th she brought her quilts to the Gateway Community room to share with anyone who wanted to come and see them. Some were sold and others were just there for display.
The themes are as varied as the fabrics -- some celebrating Christmas, Halloween or just Autumn or Winter and others featuring the jungle, lighthouses, cats or dogs. The uses for the quilts were also varied -- some for beds, wall hangings, table runners, or placemats and others for bags or clothing!
I suppose when you enjoy quilting, the possibilities are endless!
