Rugby Panthers edge the
MLS Mavericks 3 sets to 2

The MLS Lady Mavericks hosted the Rugby Panthers for their Homecoming match on Tuesday, September 16th. It was a battle to the end for both teams, as the match went the full five sets.

MLS won the first set 25 to 22 before Rugby came back and won the second set 25 to 20. Rugby then took a 2-1 lead as they won the third set 25 to 16. MLS found themselves down in the fourth set, but rallied back to win the set 25 to 22 to knot things up at 2 to 2, forcing the fifth and final set. The Lady Mavericks took an early lead, but saw that lead change hands as Rugby battled back. The set was tied several times towards the end, but it was the Panthers who managed to win the set 15 to 13 for the 3 to 2 victory.

This was the first regular season loss for the Mavericks. Their regular season record now stands at 4 wins and 1 loss.

Mavericks lose to St. John 52 to 38

MLS Mavericks took a road trip to St. John on Friday, September 12th for a Region 3 nine-man contest against the Woodchucks.

MLS kicked off to the Woodchucks to start the game and with 7:30 to go in the quarter St. John was on the scoreboard, as Dalton Poitra scored on a 21 yard pass from Seth Vivier (PAT failed). Then with 2:53 to go in the quarter, Poitra scored again, this time on a 36 yard pass from Vivier (PAT failed). It was now a 12-0 game in favor of the Woodchucks. However, the Mavericks did get on the scoreboard before the first quarter ended, as Trevor Evanger scampered 70 yards for a Maverick TD run (Connor Brackenbury scored the extra two points). The score was 12 to 8 after one quarter of play.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the second quarter, with St. John scoring first. Andrew Hanretty scored on a 17 yard pass from Vivier with 8:07 to play (PAT failed). With just seconds left on the clock, Connor Brackenbury found Jesse Mott for an 11 yard TD pass (Trey Holsten ran the pigskin in for the extra two points). The half ended with St. John leading by just two points, 18 to 16.

St. John racked up three touchdowns in the third quarter, while holding MLS to just a single touchdown. Seth Vivier scored on an 8 yard run with 10:49 to play (PAT failed), then Shane Azure scored on a 13 yard run with 8:05 to go (PAT failed), and the Woodchucks final touchdown in the third quarter was scored by Kevin Grant on a 6 yard pass from Vivier (PAT failed) with 5:10 left on the clock. MLS’s touchdown came at the 2:22 mark, when Trevor Evanger scored on a 15 yard run, his second TD of the night (PAT failed). It was now a 36 to 22 game, in favor of St. John.

MLS started the scoring in the fourth quarter, as Evanger scored from 13 yards out (Mott pass from Brackenbury) with 9:37 to go, making it a 36 to 30 game. Then St. John scored two back to back touchdowns. The first with 6:38 left on the clock, on a 33 yard run from Hanretty (Dalton Poitra pass from Vivier); and again at the 4:27 mark on a 40 yard pass from Vivier to Dalton Poitra (PAT failed). MLS answered with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Brackenbury to Mott (Brackenbury run). Then before the game ended, St. John’s Kyler McGillis earned a safety, tackling a Maverick in the end zone. St. John won 52 to 38.

Last Friday, September 19th, MLS hosted Parshall/White Shield for their Homecoming contest and won 22 to 8. Game stats next week. This Friday, MLS will be in Kenmare.

Our Redeemer’s defeats Glenburn 3 to 0

The Glenburn Panthers were in Minot on Thursday, September 18th for a district contest against the Our Redeemer’s Christian School Knights. ORCS won the contest, as they defeated the Panthers in three straight sets. Scores were 25 to 18, 25 to 19, and 25 to 21.

Minot Bishop Ryan wins Glenburn Tournament
The Glenburn Public School hosted a girls’ varsity volleyball tournament on Saturday, September 13th. Tournament action began at 9:00 a.m. with pool play. There were three pools with four teams in each pool. Pool play matches were two sets with the three point scoring. Teams earned a point for each win and a point went to the team with the most points. Results from pool play were as follows:

Lewis & Clark/Berthold 3 - Sawyer 0.
Lewis and Clark/Berthold 3 - Dunseith 0.
