The Mohall Lansford Sherwood (MLS) Mavericks opened up their 2015 football season in Mohall on Friday, August 21st, when they hosted the Towner/Granville/Upham (TGU) Titans. This was a 9-man non-conference game. Previously, both teams were in the same region, but the regions were re-aligned this year by the North Dakota State High School Activities Association. MLS is now in Region 6 and TGU is in Region 4.

TGU got on the boards first, as they scored with 6:15 to go in the first quarter when Kolter Schell completed a pass to Evan Burckhard for the 15 yard touchdown. Schell completed the two point conversion with his run to put the Titans up 8 to 0, which was how the quarter ended.

The Titans scored again with 10:42 left in the second quarter when Kolter Schell crossed the end zone from 3 yards out. The Mavericks got the defensive stop to keep the Titans from scoring the two point conversion. It was now a 14 to 0 game. With 2:51 to go in the half, TGU struck again, as Schell scored his second touchdown of the night from 15 yards out and then he added the two point conversion on a run to make it a 22 to 0 game at the half.

In the start of the second half, TGU kicked off to the Mavericks. MLS was the first to score in that half, as Talon Thompson broke loose from a couple of Titan players with nine minutes to play in the quarter and scampered down the field 35 yards for the Mavericks’ first touchdown of the season. The two point conversion pass was incomplete, making it a 22 to 6 game in favor of the Titans. Then with 1:39 to go in the quarter, Isaac Undlin caught a pass from MLS quarterback, Statler Olson, and went 45 yards for a touchdown (conversion failed), making it a 22 to 12 game. The third quarter belonged to the Mavericks, as they did all the scoring and their defense stepped up to hold the Titans scoreless at the stop.

With just 6:01 to play in the game, TGU scored their final touchdown of the night, as Lane Schmitt ran 15 yards. The conversion failed, and it was now a 28 to 12 game. But the Mavericks would answer on the next play (5:46 to go) as TGU kicked off to MLS and Tanner Driscoll made the catch and carried the pigskin 83 yards untouched for the touchdown. The two point run by Olson was no good and it was now a 28 to 18 game. The Mavericks tried the onside kick with hopes of getting the ball back, but were unsuccessful. However, neither team would score again, so the final score was 28 to 18 in favor of TGU.

TGU’s quarterback, Kolter Schell, ended the game completing 7 of 12 passed for 125 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 33 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. Teammate, Lane Schmitt, had 17 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown; and Evan Burckhard had two catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

MLS stats: Statler Olson, finished the game with 3 of 15 passes for a total of 62 yards and a touchdown, and 10 carries for 4 yards; Talon Thompson had 14 carries for a total of 87 yards and a touchdown, received 2 passes for 20 yards, and had five punts for 199 yards, with the longest being 53 yards; Isaac Undlin received one pass for 42 yards, and had three kickoffs for 88 yards, with his longest being 36 yards; Tanner Driscoll had three kickoff returns for 115 yards; and Cole Southam returned one kickoff for 22 yards.

Next action for the MLS Mavericks will be Thursday, August 27th when they will travel to New Town for a Region 6 contest. Kickoff will be at 6:00 p.m.
