MLS Mavericks win District 12
contest against Surrey 43 to 36

A doubleheader was played in Mohall on Tuesday, January 20th, when the MLS Lady Mavericks and the MLS boys hosted the Surrey Mustangs for a District 12 match-up.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Mavericks held a 16 to 2 first quarter lead over the Lady Mustangs. Surrey then outscored MLS 12 to 10 in the second quarter, but MLS still held a 26 to 14 half-time lead. Surrey came out and outscored MLS 12 to 7 in the third quarter to cut MLS’s lead to 33 to 26 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams put up 10 points in the fourth quarter, giving MLS a 43 to 36 victory.

Chelsie Deibert lead the Surrey team in scoring, as she finished with 14 points.

Scoring for MLS: Emily Abernathey 15 (2-3’s), 7 rebs., 4 assists, 3 steals; Aubree Vendsel 8, 1 reb., 5 assists, 8 steals; Macy Feland 8, 9 rebs., 3 assists, 3 steals; Calli Brackenbury 4, 2 steals; Becca Schoenberg 4, 1 steal; Hailee Depute 2, 6 rebs., 4 assists, 3 steals; Allison Voigt 2, 1 reb, 1 assist; and Morgan Depute 1 assist.

MLS finished the game shooting 41% from the field, made 3 of 4 freethrows for 75%, pulled down 24 rebs., dished out 15 assists, had 20 steals, committed 20 turnovers, and were called for 9 fouls. Surrey shot 33% from the field, made 2 of 5 freethrows for 40%, pulled down 28 rebs., dished out 9 assists, had 10 steals, committed 25 turnovers, and were called for 9 fouls.

Mohall Lansford Sherwood hosted Surrey for a boys’ and girls’ District 12 doubleheader on Tuesday, January 20th at the Donald M. Kolbo Auditorium in Mohall.

The boys’ game was played first, with Surrey holding a one point, 10 to 9, lead over the MLS boys. Surrey then outscored MLS 13 to 7 in the second quarter to head to the locker rooms up 23 to 16 at the half. The Mavericks outscored the Mustangs 17 to 15 in the third quarter, but Surrey still held the lead, up 38 to 37 heading into the fourth quarter. Surrey went on to win the game, as they outscored MLS 14 to 11 in the fourth quarter for the 52 to 44 district win.

Leading the Mustangs in scoring was Riley Zbasnick with 14 points.

Max defeats Glenburn 56 to 50
A girls’ non-conference basketball game was held in Glenburn on Tuesday, January 20th when the Glenburn Panthers hosted the Max Cossacks. The Cossacks went home with the win as they defeated the Glenburn Panthers 56 to 50.

Quarter scores were not made available.

Individual scoring for the Glenburn Panthers: Samantha Koetter 13, Katie Dufner 13, Sam Beauregard 11, Sierra Payne 6, Stephanie Rogers 4, and Izzy Spokely 3.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 5 and 10 on the year.


MLS vs. Westhope/Newburg
The Mohall Lansford Sherwood boys’ junior high basketball team opened up their 2015 season on Thursday, January 22nd, when they hosted the Westhope/Newburg Sioux for one game. MLS collected their first win of the season, as they defeated the Sioux 30 to 18.

Scoring for the Mavericks: Henry Savelkoul 15, Adam Southam 6, Garret Schmidt 4, Riley Vendsel 4, and JayDen Hanson 1.
