DENICE MUTZENBERGER
May 15, 1954 - Nov. 30, 2014
Our beautiful, kind, amazing, feisty wife, mother, and grandmother, Denice Mutzenberger, 60, of Hazen, ND was called home by her Heavenly Father on Nov. 30, 2014, surrounded by her family after a courageous eight year battle with cancer.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating.

Denice was born in Powers Lake, ND on May 15, 1954, the sixth of seven children of Oliver and Alice (Olson) Running. Denice was raised and educated in Columbus. Her family moved to Hazen in 1967, where she graduated from high school. On July 26, 1986, Denice married her loving husband of 28 years, Myron, at Peace Lutheran Church.

Denice was a devoted wife and mother of five amazing daughters. Together they all created a wonderful family home in Hazen, where they farmed in their early years. Denice retired from Great River Energy, Stanton in 2012, after 28 years.

She led a full and active life, and was an avid reader, bowler, shopper, gambler, traveler and enjoyed socializing with her many close friends. Denice was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and loved to celebrate it. She never met a stranger and had the biggest heart, always putting others before herself. She was always willing to help someone in need, especially her family. Most recently she enjoyed supporting Relay for Life in bringing awareness to Carcinoid Cancer.

Her biggest joys in her life were her faith, her husband, grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her husband, Myron of Hazen; daughters and sons-in-law, Nikki Lambert of Bismarck, Crystal (Lonn) Boyd of Fargo, Mindy (Tom) Weist of Underwood, Lisa (Lonnie) Gabrielson of Woodbury MN and Ashley Mutzenberger of Mandan;

siblings, Randy and Debbie Running of Mesquite, NV, Vicki and Vern Oakum of Sumter, SC, Beryl and Jim Dschaak and Beth and Greg Loken of Craig, CO, and Tami Running and John Pineau of Regina, Sask;

nine grandchildren, Jocelyn, Makenzee, Malia, Olivia, Landon, Braelyn, Talon, Bennett and one more grandbaby on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Alice; stepfather, Otto Kessler; sister, Bobbie Stompro; nieces and nephews, Chad, Dan, Tracy and Zachary.

Though we will miss this amazing woman in our lives, we are at peace knowing she is no longer in pain, and is in heaven with her Heavenly Father, and has been reunited with loved ones gone before her.

DORIS BUZZELL
May 10, 1918 - Nov. 18, 2014
Doris Buzzell, 96, of Bowbells, died Tuesday, Nov, 18, 2014, in a Minot hospital. Memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells. Interment will take place in the spring of 2015 at the Bowbells Community Cemetery.

Doris Margaret Larsen was born May 10, 1918, a daughter of Casberg and Olava (Sletvold) Larsen, near Larson, ND. Doris was raised and educated in in the Larson and Columbus communities before moving to Bowbells in 1934 and attended Bowbells High School as a junior; she graduated from there in 1936.

Doris married James Dominic “Dom” Buzzell on November 16, 1936. They made their home in Bowbells. They had two sons Richard “Rick” and Michael.

She began work at Peterson’s store in 1953, and remained there until 1957. Doris then began working at the First National Bank, where she was employed for 16 years before her retirement in 1973 as an Assistant Cashier. Dom passed away in 1999.

Doris was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and also the ELCA women’s organization, where she served for several years as secretary and treasurer. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Carl Oftedal Post #127 and served as Adopted Veteran’s officer for many years.

Surviving family includes: sons, Rick (Ann) Buzzell of Vancouver, WA, Michael Buzzell of Bowbells;

grandchildren, Althea Buzzell of Stevens Point, WI, and Thad Buzzell of Golden, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dom; sisters, Marion Rish, Helen Glasoe, Neoma Greenfield, Esther Dunn, Lucille Fredrickson, Evelyn Brenno.

NELSIE OAS
March 21, 1933 - Nov. 29, 2014
Nelsie K. Oas, 81, of Columbus, ND passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5 at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus with Pastor Morris Kirchhof officiated. Burial followed at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery south of Columbus.

She was born to Borghild and Melvin Gunderson on Mar. 21, 1933 in Powers Lake. She attended country school in Burke County.

Nelsie married Orien Oas of Columbus on Dec. 9, 1950. They lived in the Columbus and Powers Lake area their entire lives. In 1964, Orien and Nelsie moved to the Oas homestead south of Columbus. This is where they raised their five children.

Nelsie was a Boy Scout and 4H leader and Sunday School teacher while her kids were young.

Nelsie was preceded in death by her parents, Borghild and Melvin Gunderson; husband, Orien; and brother, Marvin Gunderson.

She is survived by her five children, Marshall (Melda) of Minot, Sheryl of Columbus, Gaylen (Debra) of Williston, Darrell (Tami) of Dekalb, Il., Merlin (Cathy) of New Prague, MN; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She has one brother, Leroy (Marlene); sisters, Muriel Smith, Jeanette Haffner, Beverly Briscoe, and Karen Oas; sisters-in-law, Margie Trihub, Marjorie Oas and Eva Oas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

ARLINE JENSEN
April 22, 1933 - Dec. 1, 2014
Arline Jensen, 81, of Powers Lake, ND died Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 at her home. Her funeral service was Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake. Burial was at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Powers Lake.

Arline was born April 22, 1933 to Henry and Amy (Holmen) Breding on her grandparents’ farm near Powers Lake. She attended rural school until fifth grade and then went to school in Powers Lake, graduating in 1950. She attended one year at Minot State Teacher’s College.

She married LeRoy Jensen on June 27, 1951. LeRoy and Arline farmed and raised cattle until moving off of the farm in 1997. They both were 4-H leaders and Luther League counselors.

Arline taught rural school for three years, worked at Liberty State Bank. She started working at Powers Lake Post Office in 1969, became Postmaster in 1977 and retired from that position in 2002.

She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake Senior Citizens and the Powers Lake Civic Club.

She enjoyed swimming at the Ina Mae Rude Aquatic Center in Stanley, playing cards, gardening, crossword puzzles and getting her hair fixed.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Deb) Jensen; daughter, Sandy Jensen; foster sons, Terry (Pam) Slotsve and Gene (Lynette) Skalicky;

grandchildren, Jordan (Lindsey) Jensen, Kelsey (Jon) Breding, Chris Fritel and Kasey Degenstein;

great grandchildren, Abby, Alexa, Ashlyn, Eastlin, Jace, Gage, Jager, Isla, Ally, Grace, Phoenix and Shelby:

brother, Roy Breding.

Arline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy; sister, Alta Slotsve; brothers, Harvey and Arvid Breding; granddaughter, Lindsay Jensen.

VICTOR HASS
Feb. 23, 1922 - Nov. 20, 2014
Victor Carl Hass, 92, of Minot, formerly of Bowbells, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014 in his home. Memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1 in Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot. Burial was in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Victor Carl Hass was born February 23, 1922, in Minnesota Township near Bowbells ND to Albert A. and Olena (Eide) Hass. He married Margaret Elaine Walleen on January 26th 1944, 70 years ago. Victor joined the Navy in February 1944 and served in the South Pacific Theater during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received during the Battle of Okinawa. Victor was discharged from the service in January 1946. He returned to his family and in 1949 they moved to the family farm.

Victor was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bowbells serving as trustee and on the church board. He was on the Minnesota Township School Board during the time of redistricting and consolidation of our present Bowbells school system. They moved into Bowbells in 1961 where he served on the Boards for the building of the Swimming Pool, Bowbells Airport and the Centennial City Park. He drove the school bus for 25 years.

Victor loved his family and served his country well and was always willing to support and work for improvements for the community, church and school.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, VFW and Amvets.

Victor participated in the Disabled American Veterans by serving as Commander of the Minot Chapter #4, North Dakota Department Commander in 1986-87, North Dakota Department Chaplain and NEC of District 14 which included North and South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana. He was a founding member of the North Dakota Veterans Home Foundation Lisbon ND and he received a 3 year appointment on the North Dakota Administrative Committee on Veterans Affairs by Governor Schafer.

Victor was a 69 year member of the American Legion Carl Oftedahl Post 127 of Bowbells and has been serving as their adjutant for the past 33 years. He was their Post Commander, North Dakota State Historian, North Dakota State Americanism Chairman and 6th District Commander.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Minot; son, Lonnie D (Mary) Hass of Fargo; daughters, Vickie Carla (Ron) Heisler of San Tan Valley, AZ and Melanie Jeni Kuhn of Minot;

seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three step-grandchildren;

sister, Helen Steffen of Fargo; sister-in-law, Millie Hostbjor of Bowbells; brother-in-law, Ivan Pedersen of Flaxton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Pauline Pedersen and Alvin, Raymond and Bennie Hass.
