Earl Engh, Sr.

April 6, 1929 to September 22, 2014

Earl Stanley Engh, Sr., 85, Sherwood, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 22, 2014, at a Minot hospital.

His funeral service was held Friday, September 26, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Sherwood.

A family service was held Thursday, September 25th, at 7:00 p.m., at the church.

Burial took place at Sherwood Union Cemetery, Sherwood.

Officiating at the service was Reverend Norman Paskowsky.

Vocalists were Kalli Engh and Mary Benning. Organist was Connie Engh.

Casketbearers were Jack Gates, Allan Engh, Randy Engh, Curt Johnson, Mark Haskins, and Rhett Benning.

Earl was born April 6, 1929, in Bottineau, a son of Adolph and Thora (Sorlie) Engh. He was raised in Sherwood and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1947. He was a member of the ND National Guard and was called into active duty with the U.S. Army. He served on the front lines in Korea, serving from January 1951 to August of 1952. He quickly moved from being an E-1 to a Staff Sergeant.

After returning from the service, he worked for a time as a border patrol agent for the U.S. Government. He was once married to Nina Anderson. Together, they had three children, Earl Jr., Angel, and Joe.

Earl worked as a livestock inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A significant assignment for him was working a hog cholera epidemic in North Carolina. He received numerous commendations for his work during this outbreak. He worked as an inspector until the mid-1970s, when his eyesight started to fail. Earl operated the Sherwood Pool Hall until his vision failed.

He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, and a 61-year-member of the Bothun-Peterson American Legion Post #213, both Sherwood. He loved hunting, fishing, trapping, and telling stories of his hunting adventures. Earl will be remembered for his unwavering faith, love of music, and his love for his family.

Earl is survived by his children, Earl Jr. (MaryLynn) Engh, Sherwood, Catherine “Angel” Larson, Minot, and Joe (Michelle) Engh, Tolley; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Amy Lehn, Bismarck, Thelma (Bill) Gates, Loraine; brother, Bob (Betty) Engh, Minot; brother-in-law, Art Haskins, Bismarck; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Carsten Peterson; brother, Arnold Engh; and sisters, Nora Gahn and Karen Haskins.

Leon Hembree
March 12, 1935
to September 20, 2014

Leon “Cub” Hembree passed away at a Minot hospital on Saturday, September 20, 2014.

A private burial has taken place at McKinney Cemetery, rural Tolley, North Dakota.

Leon was born March 12, 1935 on a farm located in Section 22 of Roosevelt Township in Renville County, North Dakota, the son of John and Blanche (Ostrom) Hembree.

Cub was known to many as a farmer over the years, enjoying all it provided.

He is survived by his brothers, Robert Hembree and Joel (Yong Hui) Hembree; sister, Virgene (Kenneth) Reischke; three nephews; and five nieces.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, James and Vance Hembree.

Doris Engstrom

March 1, 1926 to September 12, 2014

Doris Engstrom, age 88, of Westhope, North Dakota passed away Friday, September 12, 2014 at a Bottineau hospital.

Funeral services for Doris were held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope.

Burial took place at the Westhope Cemetery.

Officiating at the service was the Reverend Carol Wendel.

The organist was Ruby Berentson, and the congregation sang selected hymns.

Casketbearers were Brock Lindekugel, Steve Hendershot, Richie Langham, Quinten Degenstein, Pete Larson, and Levi Hendershot.

Honorary casketbearers were Chad and Bryant Engstrom.

Doris, a daughter of Thomas and Lillian (Forschen) Arneson, was born on March 1, 1926 on the family farm near Mohall. She was reared there and attended country school in the area. On April 2, 1946, she married Alvin Engstrom at Bottineau. They made their home on the Engstrom Family Farm near Antler. In 1961, they moved into Westhope. Alvin passed away on July 13, 1985. Doris remained in Westhope.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, and gardening.

Doris is survived by two sons, Dennis (Marlene) Engstrom of Crocker, MO, and Alex (Vicki) Engstrom of Westhope; two daughters, Ellen (Rick) Jorgensen of Orting, WA, and Nancy (Dave) Herigstad of Souris; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard Arneson of Antler, Delno Arneson of Antler, and Robert Arneson of South Dakota; two sisters, Kathleen Beckedahl of South Dakota and Shirley Kissner of Antler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert; one grandson, Victor Jorgensen; and nine siblings.
