MLS defeats Westhope/Newburg in girls’ and boys’ doubleheader

Mohall Lansford Sherwood traveled to Westhope for a boys’ and girls’ non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, December 16th against the Westhope/Newburg Sioux.

In game one, the Lady Mavericks held a two point, 13 to 11, lead over the Lady Sioux after the first stop. MLS then outscored the Sioux 24 to 10 in the second quarter, building a 27 to 21 lead at the half. The Lady Mavericks continued to pull away in the second half, as they outscored the Lady Sioux 17 to 14 in the third quarter and 10 to 5 in the fourth quarter for a 64 to 40 win.

Molly Lodoen lead her Westhope/Newburg team in scoring, as she finished with 18 points.

Scoring for MLS: Emily Abernathey 28 (2-3’s), 3 steals, 7 rebs., 8 assists; Aubree Vendsel 12, 10 steals, 5 rebs., 5 assists; Allison Voigt 8, 2 steals, 5 rebs., 2 assists; Macy Feland 7, 1 steal, 9 rebs., 3 assists; Morgan Depute 5, 1 steal, 2 rebs., 4 assists; Calli Brackenbury 2, 2 steals, 1 reb.; Becca Schoenberg 2, 1 steal, 1 reb.; Nicole Hanson 1 reb.; Morgan Raap 3 rebs.; Delaine Hanson 1 steal, 3 rebs;. and Jennah Haygood 1 steal, 3 rebs.

MLS finished the game shooting 45% from the field, made 2 of 6 freethrows for 33%, had 22 steals, pulled down 40 rebs., dished out 22 assists, committed 17 turnovers, and were called for 17 fouls. Westhope/ Newburg shot 27% from the field, made 11 of 18 freethrows for 61%, had 10 steals, pulled down 34 rebs., dished out 11 assists, committed 26 turnovers, and were called for 13 fouls.

The win improved the Lady Mavericks to 3 and 1 on the season. They finished up their 2014 portion of the season on Monday, December 22nd when they traveled to Kenmare for a non-conference game, as the Honkers have moved to a different district this year.

The second game that evening was the boys’ varsity game.

MLS held a ten point, 16 to 6, lead after one period and then outscored the Sioux 14 to 7 in the second quarter for a 30 to 13 half-time lead. The Mavericks outscored the Sioux 13 to 7 in the third quater to build their lead to 43 to 22. Westhope/Newburg then outscored MLS 16 to 12 in the fourth quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough, as the Mavericks cruised to a 55 to 38 victory.

Top scorer for the Sioux was Tate Wymann with 9 points.

Individual scoring for MLS: Trevor Savelkoul 15, Isaac Undlin 10, Berkely Santos 9, Jesse Mott 8 (1-3), Talon Thompson 7, Connor Brackenbury 4, and Jacob Smith 2.

This was the first win of the season for the Mavericks. They now have a record of 1 win and 2 losses.



MLS vs. Westhope/Newburg
Mohall Lansford Sherwood traveled to Westhope on Tuesday, December 16th for a girls’ junior varsity game with Westhope/Newburg. MLS picked up the win, as they defeated the Sioux 48 to 24.

Scoring for MLS: Becca Schoenberg 10, Delaine Hanson 7, Morgan Raap 6, Mikaylee Bahl 6, Hayley Southam 5, Brittney Weight 4, Morgan Depute 4, Calli Brackenbury 2, and Riley Guenthner 2.

MLS vs. Lewis and Clark/Berthold
MLS traveled to Berthold on Thursday, December 11th. The Mavericks’ 8th grade team picked up another win as they defeated the Bombers 23 to 16.

MLS scoring: Skylar McLain 9, Leah Feland 8, Janie Savelkoul 4, and Alli Girard 2.
