EMS Corner
It was once again time for the annual EMS Conference in Bismarck, April 3rd through April 5th, 2014. This is the conference where we get continuing education, by experienced educators. They travel from different parts of our country to show us what is new in EMS; to give us instruction in carrying out these ideas in EMS; and to reinforce our training that we have learned in our time as EMS providers.

On Thursday, April 3rd, the pre-conference workshops were held from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. The topics ranged from Cardiac, Hypothermia, Airway and Ventilation, to the Anatomy of a Motorcycle Crash. These topics are skills we need for our duties on an ambulance.

On Friday and Saturday, we had a wide range of topics to choose from, with the educators very well versed in the subject they were presenting. All were personable, some hilarious (imagine a grown man in a blue nightgown and 9 months pregnant), but all very eager to share their knowledge with the EMS providers there. There were also bonus sessions for us to attend if we wanted to. Also, there from the NREMT (National Registry of EMT) were staff members updating us on how we as providers need to recertify, as ND is the pilot project state in the new way to recertify our continued competency requirements.

There were close to 50 vendors there for us to visit, starting with a vendor preview on Thursday evening with Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, with door prizes to be given away. (I didn’t win!) The vendors were there until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, so we had plenty of time to visit their booths and see all the new equipment and gadgets they have.

There were also door prizes given away each day, (I still didn’t win!), and all of the booths give candy, Yeah! and different gadgets, and of course there are the clothing booths where we can get the latest in EMS fashions!! It is always fun to look at new things and ideas!!

There was entertainment provided on Friday night with a “50’s” themed dance, and our awards banquet on Saturday night. Each year the North Dakota EMS Association gives awards recognizing terrific service to their respective Ambulance Service. One of the regional awards, The Rising Star Award, was given to our own Dani Petersen, who is an Emergency Medical Responder and driver with the Mohall Ambulance Service, and we are very proud of Dani. Congratulations!!

Attending this year’s conference were Diane Witteman, Dan Witteman, Shelley Iverson, Vanessa Iverson, Sonia Ring, Dani Petersen, Brad Parks, Todd Olson, Teresa Scott, and Tami Petersen. I think I am safe speaking for all of us, we were all impressed with this year’s conference, and thankful that we were able to attend.
