DENNIS RUPPERT
April 28, 1949 - April 9, 2014
Dennis Jerome Ruppert was born on April 28, 1949 in Pickstown, SD to Harlan and Donna Ruppert. He was baptized on May 19, 1949, at St. Marks Catholic Church in Lake Andes, SD. It was in Midwest, WY on the first day of June in 1956, Dennis made his First Communion.

His family, consisting of Harlan, Donna, older sis Connie and little brother David, moved to Lignite, ND in 1961. It was in Lignite at St. Mary’s where Dennis was Confirmed. Dennis graduated from high school in Lignite as a part of the class of 1967.

Those years from ‘61-’67 were years full of friends, sports, fast cars and the love of his life, Carol Ann Ellis. We have to mention those high school years because although so long ago, those were the days where so many life long friends and memories as Lignite Owls were made. Denny or Rup, was a real sweetheart who loved ‘ole time rock and roll, loved to dance and excelled in all sports. Be it football, basketball, track, or baseball, Denny was a man for all seasons. His fans were many, but his biggest fans were Harlan and Donna, a son to be proud of.

Dennis and Carol were married on August 23, 1967, with their good friends, Tim Ronholdt and Donna Wadman as their witnesses. For 46 years it has been Dennis and Carol, side by side, doing what needed to be done to raise a family and grow more devoted to each other as the years passed by. They were blessed with three loving, caring children, Brenda, Denise and Jason. Family was the force that moved their world each day.

Dennis had a special bond with his children, grandchildren and kids in general. His encouraging words as he coached a baseball team, or helped out the young bowlers will never be forgotten.

Dennis, a young man with remarkable work ethic and virtue, started his working days in Lignite at various jobs around town, the gas station with Leotis Olney, Springys Roustabout and KBM Well Service. The road to employment took Dennis and Carol to Lander, WY where Dennis worked for Eklund Drilling, then Amoco Production in Recluse and Gillette, WY. The time in Wyoming was an exciting time for the young couple and free time was spent fishing, bowling, and hunting. But keeping the work place a priority was important to Dennis.

Many hours were spent in the great outdoors of Wyoming with his fishing buddy, Ronald Wayne Ellis. Whether it was Key Hole or Parks these were the days that makes a guy happiest.

A certain black lab was a constant companion of Denny’s, her name was Molly T. Smudge, a bird dog with a knack for protecting family and becoming a loyal friend. She shared the days with Dennis as they rode the UTE field together.
The Ruppert family moved to Sidney, MT where Dennis was employed by Luft Exploration. Dennis proceeded to enjoy all the area had to offer by winning both golf tourneys and bowling trophies, and checking out the fishing holes, of course. Dennis worked hard and played hard and did both with a smile and laugh we will not forget.

Dennis and Carol’s love of bowling was a deciding factor in purchasing the Lignite Lanes and Café in the late 80’s. Those days were long and together they established a very good business. The bowling friendships of young and old are still remembered. They cooked for seniors, had bowling for the kids, and every night there was a league on the lanes. With an average like Denny carried, you could always trust him for advice. On the shady side, he could never refuse bootlegging for the elderly when asked. It was also during this time we recall Denny’s addiction to Pacman, it must have been contagious because Carol was usually right there beside him.

It was in the early 90’s, with the kids on their own, it was time to focus on the future, build that retirement and have time for the two of them. EKO Drilling in Elko, NV was where he worked before landing the job that led to a 20 year career. He proudly became employee #15653 on June 20, 1994 at the Barrick Gold Strike Mine in Elko. It was his job to drive the gigantic haul truck. Elko became their home and even after 46 years of marriage they established a date night of a meal and movie. This couple loved each other so much they got married twice.

Days in Elko, and work days at the mine were numbered. The retirement date was on the horizon and the move to their home in Slayton, MN to be closer to Dennis’ mother, Donna, was only weeks away. Dennis reported for the night shift at the mine for one last time as the clock ticked toward his retirement goal. All the plans changed in a moment when Dennis suffered a massive heart attack and left this world and all of those who loved him much too soon on Wednesday, April 9, 2014.

It is with sadness we recall all the memories so many have made in the 64 years Dennis enjoyed his life on this earth. The competitive person in him drove him to enjoy every sport; the family man in him drove him to appreciate his wife, children, and his entire family. But the guy called Denny with the fast GTO, loved his country, his God and his family and friends. We are all recalling the traits of the teddy bear personality Dennis had. We think of butter on cookies, love of ketchup and his endearing ability to always compliment the cook. His love of the morning and cheerful demeanor at early hours we will long remember in the days ahead.

Those left behind to mourn the loss of a life well spent but cut short are his wife, Carol; daughters, Brenda (Matt) Kashur of Belgrade, MT and Denise (Donnie) Swenson of Fairview, MT; son, Jason (Norma) Ruppert of Williston; mother, Donna Ruppert of Slayton, MN; sister, Connie (Dale) Blom of Laurel, MT; brother, David (Joy) Ruppert of Littleton, CO. The grandchildren proud to call him Grandpa are, Deven, Zachary, Lane, Preston (Leslie), Chelsey (Carson), Sadie, Courtney and Denver. Great grandchildren who brightened his life are Gavin, Ashya and Jaydin.
Dennis had a special connection with his mother-in-law, Helen Ellis, as well as all of Carol’s brothers, sisters and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Those who have left this world ahead of Dennis are his father, Harlan Ruppert; father-in-law, Fritz Ellis; sister-in-law, Julie Ellis; and nephew, Dan Blom.

A memorial service will be held in Lignite on Saturday, April 26 starting at 4 p.m. at the 109 Steakhouse on Main Street.

Instead of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
Your memories and presence are all we request as we gather to celebrate the life of Dennis Jerome Ruppert.
