Irene Schmalz

February 4, 1929 to August 5, 2014

Irene Schmalz, formerly of Killdeer, North Dakota, passed away August 5, 2014 at the Benedictine Living Center of Garrison after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Her funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Killdeer, with Father Darnis Selvanayakam celebrating. Burial followed in the Killdeer Cemetery.

A rosary and vigil service for Irene was held at 6:00 p.m., August 8th at Stevenson Funeral Home, Killdeer.

Irene was born on February 4th, 1929 to John and Caroline (Wock) Hartman. She grew up and attended country school in Dunn County. As a young girl, she worked with her parents on the farm.

On October 14, 1947, Irene and Christ Schmalz were united in marriage at St. Edwards Church of Fayette. To this union nine children were born: Don, Carol, David, Joe, Annette, Jim, Chris, Ali, and Doug. Together, the family made their home on Christ’s parents homestead. Christ passed away October 6th, 1978.

She loved music and played the accordion and piano by ear, and to everyone’s enjoyment. She always played a song if someone would request her talent at events such as picnics, and for the enjoyment of nursing home residents. With her music came dancing and she fully enjoyed a Saturday night out dancing to the polkas and waltzs played by a home town band. She was a member of St. Edward’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, sang in the church choir, and helped at church functions. She especially loved and enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She cherished her time in the Tolley area and became close friends with many people.

Irene is survived by her nine children, Don (Patty) of Cody, WY, Carol (Alvin) Rebsom of Shepherd, MT, David (Barbara) of Ballantine, MT, Joe (Kate) of Shepherd, MT, Annette Grohs of Lino Lakes, MN, Jim (Angie) of Shelley, ID, Chris (Linda) of Ft. Worth, TX, Ali (Kent) Bahl of Sherwood, ND, and Doug (Brenda) of Minnetrista, MN; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Wanda) Hartman of Billings, MT, and Roy Hartman of Richardton; sisters, Francis Keelan of Denver, CO, and Florence Schmidt of Dickinson; and brother-in-law, Mel Kowis of Denver, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Leo and Jerry Hartman; and sister, Caroline Kowis.

Ethel Elsberry

May 2, 1934 to August 8, 2014

Ethel Elsberry, 80, of Williston, ND, died Friday, August 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Williston with her family by her side.

Her funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Williston. Rev. Gary Benson and Rev. Morris Kirchhof officiated, and interment was held at Riverview Cemetery in Williston.

Ethel Mae (Benson) Elsberry was born May 2, 1934 in La Crosse, WI, the only child to Edward and Alma (Halvorson) Benson.

She was raised and educated in Houston, MN, graduating with the class of 1952.

In the fall of 1951, she met the love of her life and best friend, Doug Elsberry, while he was stationed at Camp McCoy, WI, having returned from serving in the Korean War. They were married June 28, 1952 in Houston, MN.

To this union were born five children, Jeffrey, Mona, Joseph, Craig, and Steven.

In 1960, they moved to Antler, ND where the children were raised; then moving to Williston in 1982.

Ethel excelled at her life’s vocation to be a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was a wonderful homemaker and she cared for and fed them all well! Her happiest times were a houseful of family, feasting on a well prepared meal. Feeding a crowd of 35 or more didn’t bother her; she just cooked a little more!

She loved sports of all kinds, especially the Minnesota kind! You never said anything against her Vikings and Twins! Over the years, she faithfully supported her children in their sporting activities as well as the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ethel was a loyal supporter of the Williston State College Tetons, rarely missing a home game. Those games will never be the same without her ‘sideline refereeing!” She was especially honored when she and Doug were inducted into the Teton Hall of Fame in October 2010.

While in Antler, she was a member of the Antler Community Church, playing piano and organ, and a member of the Happy Hour Homemakers Club. Ethel was currently an active member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and the Women of LIFE. She volunteered at the church taking care of the children’s “busy bags”, assembling the PRISM, and was a part of the annual Meatball Dinner.

Ethel is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Doug; her children, Mona (Kevin) Craft, Joseph Elsberry, Craig (Sherry) Elsberry, and Steven (Debbie) Elsberry; many precious, loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Family was everything to her!

Ethel was preceded in death by her beloved son, Jeffrey, who passed away in 1955 at the age of two; and her parents, Edward and Alma Benson.
