Erik McIntyre finishes first in Division C.........
MLS Science students participate
in State Science Olympiad in Fargo

In Division C (high school), Erik McIntyre received first place overall in the event “Wright Stuff.” He constructed a free flight rubber-powered airplane that achieved a maximum time aloft of 50.84 seconds. This was Erik’s second consecutive state title as he won last year in the event “Helicopter.” Other top ten placers for MLS were Allison Voigt and Delaine Hanson, 5th, Dynamic Planet, and 5th in Scrambler. Other members of the MLS “C” team were Wyatt Jones, Trevor Evanger, Evan Rogers, Macy Sundahl, Tanner Driscoll, Berkley Santos, Levi Hendershot, and Beau Driscoll.

Team scores are based on points for each event - 24 for first, 23 for second, etc. Overall winner in Division C was Bismarck High School with 501 points, followed by Fargo Davies High School with 445, and Dickinson High School with 437.

Top Class B team was Bowman County with 412. MLS finished 21st as a team with a score of 175. There were a total of 23 teams in Division C.

In Division B, Aaron Voigt and Levi Feland were the top point getters for the MLS team. They placed 4th in Simple Machines, in which they had to construct a 1st class lever to quickly determine the ratios of three unknown masses. They also had to answer questions about simple machines. The duo also placed 6th in Crave the Wave, and 9th in Bridge Building. Other top ten placers for MLS were Jorie Holsten and Trinity Guenthner in Write It/Do It; Bella Radzwill and Jacob Gates, 10th in Bottle Rocket; and Chase Driscoll and Jacob Gates, 10th in Bio-Process Lab. Other members of the MLS “B” team were Madasun Frech, Calli Brackenbury, Dalton Moberg, Grace Solemsaas, and Summer Smith.

Overall winner in Division B was Wachter Middle School of Bismarck with 498, followed by Bismarck-Mandan Home Schoolers with 440, and Red River Valley Home School 415. Top Class B team was Bowman County with 393. MLS finished 17th as a team with a total score of 232. There were a total of 21 teams in Division B.

Bismarck High School and Wachter Middle School will represent North Dakota at the National Tournament at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, in May.

The MLS teams would like to express their sincere appreciation to the MLS-Sherwood PTO for the meal money each member received, along with water for the trip and pencils to use during the competition; and also to Dean Schoenberg for getting them to and from Fargo safely.
