Emery Duben retires from
Soil Conservation District
|
A retirement open house was held at the USDA Service Center in Mohall on Friday, May 31st for Emery Duben. Emery has worked with the United States Department of Agriculture for the past 30 years. In August of this year, Emery would have served 20 years with the Renville County Natural Resources Conservation Service. He was the District Conservationist and assisted with the Renville County Soil Conservation District. He began working for the USDA in 1983 when he worked as a Soil Conservation Technician in Turtle Lake.
Emery is looking forward to his retirement and just spending the time relaxing, taking care of his 90 head of elk, spending more time with family, and enjoying a few short trips. He and his wife, Cindy, who is a retired school teacher, have been married for 15 years. They own an elk ranch located 3 1/2 miles south of Renville Corner.
When asked what one of the biggest changes was that he saw over the years, he replied by saying, “Technology.” Emery says farmers and ranchers are a lot more progressive and there is less tillage. He also commented that the GPS has made farmers more efficient.
One of the things that Emery was most proud of was the district’s work with the education systems. He said, “Our district was head and shoulders with the education programs.” He concluded by saying, “I have a lot to be grateful for, and I truly enjoyed my job.”
No one has currently been hired to fill the position vacated by Duben, however, NRCS is in the process of filling that position.

Renville County Social Services receives award
|
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) officials from the ND Department of Human Services recently presented Renville County Social Service staff with a performance award for completing the required number of SNAP reviews in federal fiscal year 2012.
Department officials presented the award during the annual Showcase training and recognition event held in Mandan, ND last month.
“Reviews are a proven method of detecting errors early and preventing them,” said North Dakota SNAP Director Arlene Dura. “This award demonstrates the county’s commitment to providing accurate and timely food assistance benefits.”
County Social Service Director Tami Chrest, Catherine Howery, and Janine Jensen received the award. The department also presented a recognition certificate to regional representative Janice Liudahl, who is employed by the state agency.
Currently, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps about 56,600 qualifying low-income North Dakotans pay for food. Almost half of the program participants are children; many others are elderly or have disabilities.
Individuals can apply for the program at their county social service office. If they qualify, individuals receive a special debit card, which can be used to purchase food items only.
In April 2013, the federally-funded program provided 41 households in Renville County with about $9,000 in benefits that were used to purchase food at local grocers.
