Molla Bea Romine passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice on Monday, May 6, 2013.
A Celebration of Molla’s Life was held on Monday, May 13, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. Interment followed at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
Prayer Service was held at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, on Sunday, May 12, 2013.
Molla was born in rural Renville County 81 years ago. This active farm girl left for the big cities of Glendale, CA and Minneapolis, MN following graduation from Mohall High School. She returned to Mohall where she then met and married Robert R. Romine.
They moved to Minot where they raised their three children and became active and beloved members of the community. After working in several bookkeeping positions, Molla was hired as an accountant at the First District Health Unit where she began a 30 year career in public health. She was named Administrative Director in 1974 – a position she held until her retirement in 1997.
During her tenure at the Health Unit, Molla was best defined by her relentless pursuit of affordable and preventative health care, especially for women and infants.
She was a Charter Member and Past President of the ND Association of Home Health Services; Past President of the ND Public Health Association; Advisory Committee Member of the MSU Institute for Rural Human Services; MSU Infant Development Committee; Past Chairman of ND Local Health Services just to name a few! She spent her 30-year career in public health representing significant issues to members of the North Dakota Legislature.
Following her retirement, she remained active in several community organizations including the Kid’s Council Board of Directors, Medical Arts Foundation Board, ND Maternal and Health Advisory Committee, and several Minot Chamber of Commerce committees. She served as a Ward County Commissioner from 2002 to 2006. She most recently served on the Ward County Courthouse Building Committee and as Past President of the Minot YWCA. She was also an active member of Christ Lutheran Church of Minot.
But, as her family will attest, her greatest service was to them. She provided a strong foundation for life as she raised three children who learned first-hand the value of servant-hood and giving back to community. She travelled across the country to care for her grandchildren when needed and to witness their accomplishments.
Molla enjoyed the solitude and natural beauty surrounding the family cabin at Rice Lake where she hosted not just family, but friends and even reunion groups. She left a legacy of Rice Lake memories in multiple photo albums which she compiled as events were occurring and turning out photos daily in the “car wash” as Great-Grandson Thomas dubbed the photo printer.
She was a woman of fashion, of creativity, of loyalty, of service, and a unique blessing to all whose paths she crossed.
Survivors include her children: David (Cindy) Romine of Bismarck, Robert C. (Patti) Romine of Inman, SC, and Molla K. (Ben) Maytubby of Midland, TX; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis (Robert) Loomis of Minot; sister-in law, Beverly Witteman of Mohall; many nieces and nephews; and friends and caregivers who walked beside her in her determined battle against cancer.
Molla was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Lucile Witteman; husband, Robert; brother, David Witteman; and three infant children: John, Elizabeth, and Mary.
