Renville County MathCounts event won by an MLS team















A team from MLS won this year’s Renville County MathCounts competition. Members of that team are pictured left to right: Janie Savelkoul, Leah Feland, Ally Feland, and Fischer Ackerson.

The Mohall Lansford Sherwood Public School District hosted the annual Renville County Junior High MathCounts on Wednesday, February 3rd. A total of 16 7th and 8th grade math students from both Mohall Lansford Sherwood and Glenburn participated in the event. Each school had two teams, with four students on each team.

Students from Glenburn participating were: Dylan Utter, Sam Bennett, Rebekka Larson, Michael Nash, Lila Farden, Bridger Uleberg, Morgan McIver, and Kaitlyn Bennett.

MLS math students taking part were: Janie Savelkoul, Fischer Ackerson, Ally Feland, Adam Southam, Leah Feland, Ryan Feland, Myla Grengs, and Kayla Kinkhead.

Students competed individually and as teams in written matches. Subjects included algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry. The top individuals for Renville County were: 1st - Dylan Utter of Glenburn - 22; 2nd - Janie Savelkoul of MLS - 17; 3rd - Fischer Ackerson of MLS - 16; 4th - Ally Feland - 15; 5th - Sam Bennett of Glenburn - 12; and 6th - Adam Southam of MLS - 10. The top eight individuals received trophies and a pin.

Winning the team event was one of the teams from MLS consisting of Janie Savelkoul, Leah Feland, Ally Feland, and Fischer Ackerson. Their math instructor is Cody Beck. The winning team was determined by taking a combination of the team members’ individual scores as well as the overall team score. The team scored a 14.25 with a team from Glenburn coming in second with a score of 8.5.


Madeline Solemsaas and Connor Brackenbury awarded scholarships from BSC Foundation























CONNOR BRACKENBURY

The Bismarck State College Foundation recently recognized Connor Brackenbury of Mohall, ND, and Madeline Solemsaas of Sherwood, ND, as the recipients of their scholarships.

Connor Brackenbury, son of Wayne and Clarissa Brackenbury of Mohall, was the recipient of the Great River Energy Scholarship. The $500.00 scholarship is payable for the Spring 2016 semester and will help Brackenbury pursue a technical degree from Bismarck State College.























MADELINE SOLEMSAAS

Madeline Solemsaas, daughter of Guy and Wendy Solemsaas of Sherwood, was the recipient of the Marc and Betty Christianson Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is payable for the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters and will help Solemsaas pursue a degree from Bismarck State College. Scholastic achievement is the principal criteria for all academic scholarships.

Both Brackenbury and Solemsaas are 2015 graduates from Mohall Lansford Sherwood School District.

MLS-Mohall PTO Silent Auction Bake Sale February 16th
The MLS-Mohall PTO will be holding a Silent Auction Bake Sale on Tuesday, February 16th. The event is being held in conjunction with the MLS boys’ basketball game against Underwood, which will be played in Mohall, and will also be Senior Night.

Anyone who would like to donate goodies to be sold at the bake sale is asked to call Kristy Titus at 756-6509.

MLS boys’ basketball team recipient of an Award of Excellence
On Thursday, January 28th, the Mohall Lansford Sherwood School District received notice that the MLS-Mohall Boys’ Basketball Team and Coaching Staff were selected as a National Federation Award of Excellence recipient. The team was presented with a certificate for the award. The certificate read, “AWARD OF EXCELLENCE for Exemplary Display of Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity presented to MLS-Mohall Boys’ Basketball Team and Coaching Staff.”

The National Federation and the North Dakota High School Activities Association view good sportsmanship/ citizenship as a concrete measure of understanding and commitment to integrity, ethical play, and behavior. They also realize those values of good citizenship are attained through a cooperative effort. Coaches, student participants, parents, fans, school administration, school boards, and spirit groups are instrumental in helping create a positive environment in which respect for self and others is fostered.
