Renville County 4-H Livestock Team has been busy

The Renville County 4-H Livestock Judging Team had a busy season this year. The Junior Team (youth under 13 years of age) started the year on February 6th in Napoleon where the junior team placed 8th out of 13 teams. Lilly Solemsaas placed 7th individually.

On February 20th, the junior team travelled to Towner and finished the day 3rd out of 8 teams. Isabell Buynak placed 6th at the contest.

Then on February 27th the team competed at Beulah and took home 3rd place out of 16 teams. Lilly Solemsaas placed 4th in the junior division.

The team finished out the year competing at the State 4-H competition at NDSU in Fargo, ND. The junior team finished the contest 18th out of 25 teams. Individual placings for the state contest were: Lilly - 60th, Isabell - 88th, Rilynn - 94th, Lexi - 97th, and Abby - 113th. Grace Solemsaas competed individually in the Senior division (for those 13 and over) and placed 58th.

Renville County Junior Team members are: Isabell Buynak, Lexi Drangsholt, Lilly Solemsaas, Rilynn Beck, and Abby Buynak. The team was coached by Wendy Solemsaas and assisted by Madeline Solemsaas.

The Livestock Judging contest requires kids to evaluate a class of four individual animals in a species and rank them 1 through 4. At the state competition the kids judged three classes each of beef, sheep, and swine. Following the live animal evaluation they prepare a set of oral reasons on each species and give their oral evaluation of three classes. They are also given performance data to use in their decision making, along with the live animal evaluation. The livestock judging contest helps youth develop great decision making, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. The kids had great fun this season and learned many new skills.

MLS Foods Class studying cultures
and cuisine of Scandinavian countries

Did you know that there are more Norwegian descendants living in the United States than there are Norwegians living in Norway? Did you know that in Denmark, the fine for crossing a red light on a bicycle is about $76.30 in US dollars? Did you know that Icelandic people don’t use surnames or family names, only first names? Did you know that Icelandic mothers hang out with their friends for coffee and leave their baby outside for fresh air, watching them through the window and it’s perfectly safe? These are just some of the fun facts that the Advanced Foods Class studying Cultures and Cuisine at MLS recently uncovered while preparing their “Scandinavian Countries” projects.

Students selected and researched one of the five Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. They prepared display boards informing the viewer about the people, cuisine, customs, holidays, traditions, and foods of their selected country. Students also prepared an authentic recipe representing the food eaten in that country. The final objective for the student was to make people think they would like to visit this country. Staff and students were invited to view the project boards, sample the foods, and ask questions of the students. The “Scandinavian country” project required students to draw on skills such as time management, problem solving, publishing, presenting, communicating, public speaking, and mathematical problem solving, as well as food preparation skills.

The Cultures and Cuisine section of Foods Class gives students the opportunity to “visit” the various countries of the world. This focuses on teaching students about the people, customs, cultures, and cuisines of other countries and to see the relationship and influence on themselves as a member of this country. Students create and sample foods of each country studied, giving them a “taste” of other cultures. This project was part of an advanced level Family and Consumer Science Foods Class which is taught by Valerie Aho.

Communication Arts contest held

The 2016 Renville County 4-H Communication Arts Contest was held on Wednesday, April 27th at the Renville County Courthouse. The Communication Arts Contest is designed to help 4-H’ers develop communication skills that are useful throughout a lifetime and to practice these skills before a group.

Participating in the Communication Arts – Speech contest, Teen Division were Hayley Southam of Sherwood, who received a blue ribbon for an Interpretive Reading, and Shannon Asheim of Mohall, who also received a blue ribbon for an Interpretive Reading. Participating in the Pre-Teen Division was Taylor Cattin of Kenmare, who received a Grand Champion ribbon for Public Speaking, and Garrett Cook of Kenmare, who received a blue ribbon for Illustrated Talk. In the Clover Division: William Cook of Kenmare, who received a Grand Champion ribbon for a Commercial, and Harold Armet of Lansford, who received a blue ribbon for an Interpretive Reading.

MLS Baccalaureate scheduled
for Sunday, May 22nd in Mohall

Baccalaureate for the MLS Class of 2016 will be held in Mohall at Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. The Mohall (area) Ministerium is offering this ecumenical Baccalaureate service to allow people of all denominations to join together in offering praise to God, and to honor, affirm, pray for, and congratulate the graduates as they enter into this new phase of their lives.

A meal, catered by Prairie Bistro, will be provided for the graduating seniors plus two guests, to be served at the church at 6:00 p.m. MLS seniors are asked to please RSVP (for the meal) by Tuesday, May 10th to or call 605-354-0875.

The worship service, which is open to the community, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. A short video message, Verve, (shown with permission) will be presented highlighting the journey of a truly amazing young man who has overcome astounding difficulties. His life and his uplifting message have inspired thousands around the world, challenging everyone to overcome obstacles and reach for dreams they ordinarily think are beyond their reach.

Refreshments will be served following the service.
