MLS Lady Mavericks finish 4th at Region 6 Tournament

The Region 6 Volleyball Tournament was held at the Minot Municipal Auditorium on Monday, November 10th; Tuesday, November 11th; and Thursday, November 13th. Four teams from District 11 - Rugby (#1), Bottineau (#2), Sawyer (#3), and Westhope/Newburg (#4), along with four teams from District 12 - Our Redeemer’s Christian School (#1), Minot Bishop Ryan (#3), DesLacs/Burlington (#2), and Mohall Lansford Sherwood (#4), all qualified for the Regional Tournament.

Opening round matches were played on Monday, November 11th.

In the first match of the day, Our Redeemer’s Christian School defeated Newburg/Westhope in three straight sets. Set scores were 25 to 15, 25 to 6, and 25 to 11.

The second match that afternoon had Minot Bishop Ryan eliminating Bottineau 3 sets to 0. Set scores were 25 to 13, 25 to 14, and 25 to 12.

Mohall Lansford Sherwood faced Rugby in the first evening match. The Mavericks scored the first two points of the first set and never trailed. MLS went on to win by a score of 25 to 15. Set two was much like the first set, as MLS took an early 17 to 4 lead and kept the momentum going, as they took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25 to 13 win.
After trailing in the third set, 3 to 0, MLS scored four straight points on a Rugby net violation, block by Macy Sundahl, kill by Callie Carlson, and a kill by Hailee Depute to go up 4 to 3. The Panthers did manage to score a point to knot things at 4 to 4, but from that point on it was all Mavericks, as they went on to win the set 25 to 13, allowing MLS to advance to the semi-finals of the Regional Tournament with a 3 to 0 win over Rugby.

The final match of the evening had DesLacs/Burlington completing a sweep for District 12, as they defeated the Sawyer Flashes in three straight sets. Scores were 25 to 11, 25 to 20, and 25 to 8.

Two semi-final matches were played on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11th.

The 6:00 p.m. match had Our Redeemer’s playing Minot Bishop Ryan. The Lady Knights were victorious and earned a spot in the championship match with their 3 to 0 win over the Lady Lions. Set scores were 25 to 14, 25 to 18, and 25 to 21.

Mohall Lansford Sherwood and DesLacs/Burlington battled it out in the second semi-final match to see who would face the Knights for the District 12 championship. The match went four sets, as DLB came out and edged the Mavericks 25 to 23. But the Mavericks fought back and defeated the Lakers by two points, 26 to 24 in set two. The third ... All Region Team



























Callie Carlson of MLS was named to this year’s All Region Team.

Following the tournament, awards were handed out. Those awards included naming an All-Region Team. Named to that team were: Angie Anderson of Towner/Granville/Upham; Gabbie Bohl of Minot Ryan; Stephanie Brenden of Bottineau; Callie Carlson of Mohall Lansford Sherwood; Brittany Degree and Megan DeGree, both of DesLacs/Burlington; Madison Erickson of Lewis and Clark/Berthold; Makayla Gartner of Our Redeemer’s; Shae Heidlebaugh of Rugby; Morgan Olson of Our Redeemer’s; Mara Roteliuk of Sawyer; Hannah Stewart of Minot Ryan; and Emily Stier of Rugby.

Our Redeemer’s head coach, Kara Nunziato was named the Region 6 Coach-of-the-Year.

Minot Ryan’s Gabbie Bohl was selected as the Region 6 Senior Athlete.

Pairings for the State B Tournament starting on Thursday are:

12:00 p.m.: North Star vs. Thompson.
2:00 p.m.: Our Redeemer’s vs. Ray.
6:00 p.m.:  Hankinson vs. Napoleon/Gackle/Streeter.
8:00 p.m. Hazen vs. Grant County.


2014 MLS football award winners











MLS football players who received awards this year were left to right: Cole Feland, Tanner Lembke, Trevor Evanger, Berkley Santos, Randy Kelly, Trey Holsten, Talon Thompson, Tyler Schrupp, and Jesse Mott.

The annual football awards banquet was held in the Multi-Purpose Area at the MLS-Mohall School on Sunday, November 9th. Parents of the four seniors - Connor Brackenbury, Cole Feland, Randy Kelly, and Trevor Evanger, organized and served a meatball dinner prior to the awards being presented. Parents of the remaining football players provided salads and desserts.

MLS finished their 2014 season with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses and was just one game short of making the playoffs. This was an improvement over last year’s season of 1 win and 8 losses.

Head Coach Cale Peterson announced the winners of this year’s awards, which were voted on by the players. Receiving awards this year were:

Most Valuable Player: Trevor Evanger.
Offensive Most Valuable Player: Trevor Evanger.
Co-Defensive Most Valuable Players: Trevor Evanger and Trey Holsten.
Hardest Worker: Randy Kelly.
Defensive and Offensive Lineman-of-the-Year: Berkley Santos.
Most Improved: Tyler Schrupp and Tanner Lembke.
Best Newcomer: Tanner Lembke.
Best Scout Player: Tyler Schrupp.

Coach Peterson also recognized the four senior players and thanked them for their years of contribution to the team.

Six MLS players made this year’s Region 3 Football Team. They were: Senior - Trevor Evanger; Sophomores - Berkley Santos and Talon Thompson. Named Honorable Mention on the team were: Senior - Cole Feland; and Juniors - Jesse Mott and Trey Holsten.

This past week the Region 3 Nine Man Football team was announced. Players named to that team were:

Towner/Granville/Upham: Seniors - Eli Luna and Colter Thorp; Junior - Lane Schmitt; and Sophomore - Kolter Schell.

Westhope/Newburg/Glenburn: Senior - Chance Kitzman; Juniors - Chas Tofteland, Dustin Weeks, Chase Conway, and Reese Schell; and Freshman - Trent Marquart.

St. John: Seniors - Andrew Hanretty and Shane Azure; Juniors - Seth Vivier and Dalton Poitra; Sophomore - Kevin Grant; and Freshman - Kyler McGillis.
