Renville County Muskrats are West Region Runner-up and qualify for State B Tourney

The Muskrats moved into their post season play on Wednesday, July 23rd when they began their West Region Sectional Tournament in Garrison. Renville County came into the tournament as the #7 seed and had to face Stanley the #3 seed team in the second game of the tournament. The Muskrats struck first in the game, as they scored three runs and held that lead until the bottom of the fifth when Stanley came across with four runs and took the lead, 4 to 3. But the Muskrats would rally in the top of the seventh and scored four runs of their own to regain the lead at 7 to 4 and pull off their first upset of the tournament.

For the game, Renville County scored their 7 runs on 5 hits and 11 walks, committed 5 errors, and left 8 men stranded on the bases. While Stanley scored their 4 runs on 1 hit, committed 4 errors, and left 3 men on the bases.

On the mound and getting the win for the Muskrats was Ryley Brown who struck out 8 Stanley batters and had 0 earned runs. Behind the plate catching was Doug Winzenburg. Leading hitter for the Muskrats was Ryley Brown who was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored; and Berkley Santos was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Renville County then moved into quarter final play and met up with the #3 seeded Surrey Blue Sox. Renville County took control of this game early on and never trailed. The Muskrats scored one run in the second and then had a big third inning, coming up with 5 runs to make it a 5 to 0 game. After adding two more runs in the top of the fourth and Surrey getting on the board in the bottom of that inning with one run, the Muskrats were up 8 to 1. Two runs would come across for the Muskrats in the top of the sixth to make it a 10 to 1 game. But the Muskrats weren’t done yet, as they scored another 2 runs in the top of the seventh and were now in control, up 12 to 1. With two outs and two men on base, Surrey’s Cole Zaderaka put one over the fence to cut Renville County’s lead to 12 to 4 and that would be how the game ended as the Muskrats managed to get that third out and pull off another upset.

For the game, Renville County scored their 12 runs on 14 hits and 8 walks, committed 1 error, and left 12 men stranded during the game. Surrey scored 4 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks, committed 2 errors, and left 4 men on the bases.

Credited with the win for the Muskrats was Connor Brackenbury who went the distance and struck out 4 Surrey hitters and gave up 3 earned runs. Ryley Brown was behind the plate doing the catching.

Getting hits for the Muskrats were: Connor Brackenbury who was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored; Ryley Brown was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI; Doug Winzenburg was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs; Wyatt Thompson was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored; and Wyatt Schmidt was 3 for 5 and had 2 RBI’s.

The other game in the winner’s bracket saw Burlington pull an upset, as they beat Hazen 5 to 3.
