Kathleen Carlson

March 19, 1928 to October 13, 2014

Kathleen (Kaye) Ione Carlson, 86, Bismarck, passed away October 13, 2014 at Missouri Slope Care Center.

A memorial service was held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2014.

Kaye was inurned with her husband, Frank, at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mandan, at 1:00 p.m. Friday following the service and lunch.

A gathering for sharing of memories and celebration of her life was held Thursday, October 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Kaye was born to Delbert and Edna Kelley on March 19, 1928 in Lisbon, ND. She was raised in Lisbon and attended school in Lisbon, graduating in 1946. Kaye’s first acts of selflessness began early as she cared for and supported her grandmother. Kaye worked at the JC Penny store in Lisbon and soon gained employment with Bell Telephone as an operator.

She married Frank Carlson on June 2, 1957 and moved to Duluth, MN and continued to work for Bell Telephone. In Duluth, Kaye and Frank were blessed with their first child, Collette, and two sons were to follow, Craig and Stuart. Kaye and Frank’s family made homes in Brookings, SD, Bowdle, SD, and Bismarck. Kaye loved people and enjoyed gatherings in her home, including knitting club, homemaker’s club, Bible Study, and outside the home such as bowling, square dancing, golf, volunteering her time, and was always up for any outdoor activity.

Kaye was a selfless individual displaying tolerance, patience, kindness, and love. Kaye was a gentle person and one of her best character traits was that of a listener. She had a strong work ethic and felt if a job was worth doing it may as well be done right.

She never felt that she was a good cook, but the line would be very long of those that would disagree. Her gravy was a masterpiece, not to mention the lemon meringue pie and carmel rolls! She would always ask how it tasted because she claimed that cooking the meal dampened her taste buds. The looks of satisfaction, generated from guests sitting around her dinner table, were nonverbal confirmation as its best.

Kaye worked at Med Center One for 25 years as a receptionist/switchboard operator and was a true professional. Her phone voice and her voice over the intercom system was cheerful and confident.

Survivors include her three children, Collette Carlson-Pusc, Bismarck, sons, Craig (Carol), Mandan, and Stuart (Nancy), Mohall, ND; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson; along with several nieces and nephews.

Awaiting her arrival in eternal life is her husband, Frank; her parents; brother, Delbert Jr.; and sister, Bonnie.
