Lynn Helming

January 14, 1920 to May 22, 2015

Lynn J. Helming, 95, Mohall, formerly of Lansford, died Friday, May 22, 2015, at a Minot hospital.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Trinity United Church, Lansford.

Burial will be in the Lansford Cemetery, Lansford.

A family service will be held today, Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.

Visitation will be today, Wednesday, May 27, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Lynn was born January 14, 1920, in Lansford, the only son of Lewie and Minnie (Wettengel) Helming. He attended school through the tenth grade; at that time, Lynn’s father was ill so Lynn began his career as a farmer. Lynn first rented the homestead of his uncle, Herman Helming, and later purchased it.

He married Vivian LaCrosse on February 1, 1943, in Plentywood, MT. In addition to farming his 960 acres, Lynn worked as a carpenter. He was employed by Farroh Construction of Minot for three years, beginning in 1959. Lynn helped build many homes in the Lansford area; the Lutheran Church in Lansford; and he also built his own home.

Lynn served on the board of directors of the Lansford Mini-Mall and was head carpenter, finishing the interior of that building in 1982. He previously served on the Church Council of Trinity Lutheran Church, was a member of Masonic Lodge #82, a member of the Elks Lodge #1089, a charter member of the Lansford Thresherman’s Association, Lansford Commercial Club, a part-owner of Lansford Lanes, and also served on the Lansford Township Board. His hobbies included rope spinning at rodeos in Minot, building furniture, model airplanes, cross country skiing to and from town during the winter months, and bowling (with an average of 180).

On the suggestion of his cousin, Ralph Helming, Lynn built a scale model of the City of Lansford. On June 30, 2002, the Minot Daily News published an article of how Lynn worked for 13+ years to construct the entire town of Lansford in its 1920 look, complete with children on bicycles, Model T’s, cattle in rail yards, and a full Main Street, and it’s all shown on a huge piece of plywood at each annual Threshing Days. The population of Lansford then peaked at about 600, in comparison to the present 250.

Lynn and Vivian moved into the Good Samaritan Society in 2007, to Brentmoor Assisted Living, Minot, in 2008, and returned to the Good Samaritan Society in 2012.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Vivian Helming, Mohall; sons, Robert (Diana) Helming, Lansford, Fred (Kathy) Helming, and Rodney Helming, all of Fargo; son-in-law, John Dewald, San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Ann Dewald.
